NVC Chp1: Giving from the heart
A way to Focus Attention
NVC expresses itself with honesty and clarity, while at the same time paying others a respectful and empathetic attention. We hear our deeper needs and the needs of others
NVC is more than a process or language
On the deeper level, it is an ongoing reminder to keep our attention focused on a place where we are more likely to get what we are seeking
There is the story of a man searching for his keys on all fours. The police officer asks him where he dropped it. He said in the alley but he is searching on the sidewalk because the light is better there.
NVC is founded on language and communication skills that strengthen our ability to remain human, even under trying conditions. It is about recognizing that humans are meant to relate to one another.
NVC gives from the heart
When you give from the heart you do so out of the joy that springs forth whenever you willingly enrich someone else's life
NVC process
Four components of NVC
Feelings
Needs
Observations
Requests
Next we state how we feel when we observe this action:
Annoyed
Scared
Joyful
First, we observe what is happening in a conversation.
The trick is to be able to articulate this observation
without introducing any judgment or evaluation—to simply say what
people are doing that we either like or don’t like. Next, we state how we
feel when we observe this action: are we hurt, scared, joyful, amused,
irritated? And thirdly, we say what needs of ours are connected to the
feelings we have identified. An awareness of these three components is
present when we use NVC to clearly and honestly express how we are.
