Past continuous
Things in progress at a point in time
to talk about something that was in progress at a time in the past.
At three o'clock, I was working. (I started before three o'clock and finished after three o'clock.)
Interepted actions with the past simple
to show that one action started before and probably continued after another action.
I was walking to the station when I met John.
The long action is in the past continuous.
Habits in the past
might choose the past continuous to suggest that the habit happened more than we expect, or irregularly
there's an emotional meaning here too - it can mean that we think the habit happened too much, but sometimes the habit is a good one.
I was constantly losing my keys.
Future in the past
use
was / were going to + infinitive
to talk about when we made a plan but the plan
didn't happen
.
He was going to go to the gym but he decided to go to the pub instead.
also use
would
to talk about the future in the past
much less common
I thought Julia would come.
maybe the thing happened and maybe it didn't. We're not certain.
