Key points
Compression of spinal cord due to narrowing of the vertebral canal
Most commonly seen in 1 or 2 year old, rapidly growing male horses
Symmetric clinical signs
Treatment is limited and often unrewarding
Clinical signs
SYMMETRIC ATAXIA, paresis and spasticity
Hindlimbs are worse than forelimbs
Wide based stance at rest with proprioceptive deficits
Stumbling, toe dragging and circumduction of the hindlimbs can be seen
Affects younger horses (less than 4-5 years of age)
Diagnosis
Signalment (young rapidly growing male horse)
radiographs (with or without myelogram)
Treatment
Very limited
Can do surgery but super $$ so most people don't
Stall rest, NSAIDs and dietary restrictions
Prognosis
poor
