THE STORY OF KARBALA
8th dhul hijjah: husayn leaves for kufa, despite being advised by senior sahabah not to
husayn was told that as prophet muhammad (SAW) (his grandfather) chose the akhirah over dunya, he was never supposed to be a man of power, and was also reminded of how his father (ali) was betrayed in iraq
despite warnings, husayn still went, and had ibn ziyyad (one of yazid's most powerful men) waiting for him
husayn had sent two messengers to iraq to tell people of his arrival, but both were executed
-
9th dhul hijjah: muslim, cousin of husayn, was thrown to his death
3rd muharram 61 AH: in the plains of karbala, 40,000 men intercepted husayn - this seige lasted 5-6 days
-
hussein provided three alternative options instead, but even as reasonable as they were, were rejected by ibn ziyyad
ibn ziyyad then gave two other options - either war, or the oath
9th muharram 61 AH: shimr reiterates ibn ziyyad's choices, which hussein continues to reject
war then breaks out, and it is here that husayn ibn ali is then killed and decapitated by shimr and sinarin, taking his head and sending it to ibn ziyyad as proof
