Five Pillars: Provides followers the proper balance between action and faith.
Shahadah- confession of faith: Only one God and Muhamad is his prophet.
Mohammad: Born in the Mecca in 570 he is the prophet for Islam. He believed that he was the messenger for God and revealed his teachings.
Gabriel: The archangel who was the voices that Mohammad had heard encouraging Mohammed to recite.
Abu Bakr: An advisor to Muhammad and became the first caliph, which is the person in charge of the Islamic world.
Sunni: The largest subsection of Islam. The traditionalist branch of Islam and followers of sunnah.
Sh'ia: Another subsection of Islam. This sect believes in successors, and that God chose Ali to be Muhammad’s successor.
Tawheed: This is the belief in Allah and only Allah. This is the one God belief in Islam.
Shirk: This is the belief of polytheism or belief that Allah is not the one true God.
Salat - Daily prayer- 5 times: The ritual prayer which should be performed five times over the course of a day.
Quran: Holy book for Islam which the prophet Mohammad helped to shape. It corrects the errors of the old and new testaments.
Hadith: These are the teachings from Muhammad and seen as moral guidance for Muslims.
Sharia: The law which comes from Hadiths and the Quran.
Theocracy: A government which is has power that comes from religious officials.
People of the book: Christians, Jews, and Muslims since they are the people that worship the one true God.
Al – Kitab: Followers of the Abrahamic religions who were guided by scripture.
Sawm – Ramadan: Fasting during Ramadan which is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.
Sufism: A branch of Islam which focuses on personal and emotional experiences which strengthen your relationship with Allah.
Hajj – pilgrimage to Mecca: Vowing to go to the Mecca once you have the means to do so.
Mecca: This is the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad and is considered the holiest city. It is located in Saudi Arabia.
Medina: Also located in Saudi Arabia this is where Muhammad took his followers after he was pushed out of Mecca. This migration to medina was called the Hijrah and is when the official start of Islam’s calendar is.
Zakat – charity: Donating 2.5% of your salary to help others.
Jihad – lesser and greater: Jihad means the struggle against the evil. Lesser is the evil on the outside while greater is the evil within.
