HOW A NETWORK FUNCTIONS/LOCAL AREA NETWORKS (LAN)
NETWORK
a computer have to be connected to a modem (modulator / demodulator)
the modem
modulate
digital electrical signals into tones and
demodulate
incoming tones into digital signals, to comunicate between
computers
from
phone lines
A network involves different types of computer doing different jobs:
server
stores data and allows other computers to access it
client
any computer which receives and ask data from a server
router
directs the traffic of data around the network
computers can also exchange data directly between one another as equals
(P2P communication)
LOCAL AREA NETWORKS
LAN
connects computers within
limited area
(same building)
the central computer (server) and hold commons files
the clients can access data from the server
all devices connected are called 'nodes', connected in different way to each others:
ring network forms a circle
star network radiates from a central hub
bus network is linear
LAN's can comunicate with the same protocol linked by bridges
WAN
same work of LAN, but extended to a larger geographical area
INTRANET
private computer network
usually created by
organisation
that can
control access
and
protect
datas
