Jesus: Believed by Christians to be the son of God. There are different belief systems on the form in which Jesus took. Stories of his life include his birth being in a manger, crucifixion, and resurrection.
Mary: The mother of Jesus. She is called the virgin Mary because she became pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist: Thought to be a prophet of God and a predecessor to Jesus. John baptized Jesus and claimed God was coming with judgement.
original sin: This is the belief in Christianity that every person is born into sin. This is due to the actions of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Apostolic succession: Found today in the pope. It is the teachings that have been passed down and it is the official position of Christianity.
Canonical Gospels: The collective works of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John make up the New Testament which represent the stories and information about Jesus.
Synoptic Gospels – Mark Matthew Luke: Starting with Mark these gospels tell a similar story of the Jesus’ life. These three gospels share the same story in contrast to John.
Mystical Gospel – John: The fourth gospel is the gospel of John and does not contain a birth story. In John’s gospel he talks about Jesus’s teachings and is not ordered.
Gnostic Christianity: These are Christians who believe in the mythical account of Jesus meaning that Jesus never existed in flesh and blood. They believed that Jesus was a spirit rather than a being.
Gospel of Thomas: This gospel claims that the Kingdom of heaven is both inside and outside of us. A problem that arises with this is if it is inside of us then we would not need a church to help us learn.
Gospel of Mary Magdalene: A gospel which was excluded from the cannon and falls in like with gnostic, Mary is trying t comfort the disciples of Jesus after his death.
Gospel of Judas: The idea that Judas was a part of the plan for Jesus and needed to portray him. In different gospels there are different accounts for what Jesus said.
Marcion: Wanted to create a Christian Bible but believed that there should not be an Old Testament since during the Old Testament God can be mean, but Jesus acted as a pure soul.
Council of Nicea: This was the first congregation for the Christian church in which they addressed the idea that Jesus was a part of the trinity and was the son of God.
Trinity: The belief in Christianity that God takes the form of three people. This is the father, the son, and the holy spirit.

Eastern Orthodox: One of the three main branches of Christianity. Official split occurred in 1054 with disputes over the pope’s power and other issues.

Protestant Reformation: A Christian reform that happened in the 1500s in England. Some of the differences include the eucharist and authority of the pope. It is what created a lot of the denominations we know now.
Luther: Martin Luther was key figure in the protestant reformation. He saw problems in the active state of the church including the act of paying for forgiveness of your sins.
Calvin: Brought to light the idea of predestination which is the concept that before your life God determined who would be saved and who would not.
