Electricity (Charlotte & Phedora) - Coggle Diagram
Electricity (Charlotte & Phedora)
What is an electrical system?
electricity
a form of energy
can be used in electrical equipment to produce other forms of energy such as heat and light.
The path through which electricity flows is the electric circuit.
Equipment that needs electricity to work
examples
Toaster
Hairdryer
Microwave
Oven
Iron
Lamp
Televison
Things that uses electricity have number of components inside them.
These components make up an electrical system
Like the human system, each component in an electrical system plays an important role in helping the system function properly
What is a simple electric circuit made up of?
bulb
A bulb is an electrical device that is often used in a circuit
The filament of the bulb is usually made of tungsten
This is Tungsten
Before
after
A bulb shines when the filament gets very hot and begins to give of light
switch
A switch is used to control the flow of electric current in a circuit.
A switch either breaks or completes an electric circuit.
When the switch is open, there is a gap or break in the electric circuit.
Electric current cannot flow through the gap in the circuit.
When the switch is closed, electric current can flow through the switch , and the circuit is complete
energy source
Batteries
When the two poles of the battery are connected in a closed electric circuit , electric current flows through the circuit.
A battery has a positive end and a negative end
wires
Electric currents usually flow through wires.
wires are covered with materials
Such material do not allow electric current to pass through them easily
Examples
Rubber
Plastic
Wires are generally made of copper
Copper allows electric current to pass through easily
What are electrical conductors and insulators?
Electrical conductors
What are they?
materials that allow electricity to flow through them.
Examples
Metals
gold
silver
copper
Liquids
salt solution
mercury
Electrical insulators
What are they?
materials that do not allow electricity to flow through them.
Examples
glass
plastic
wood
air
circuit tester
it is used to distinguish between electrical conductors and insulators
A circuit tester is a simple electric circuit with a bulb.
To test whether a material is a conductor or an insulator, we connect an object made of that material to the circuit.
When an electrical insulator is connected to the circuit, the bulb does not light up. This is because electric current cannot flow through the electrical insulator, so the circuit remains open.
When an electrical conductor is connected to the circuit, the bulb lights up. This is because the object closes the gap and the circuit by allowing electric current to flow through it.
How do we draw a circuit diagram?
It is easier to draw an electric circuit using symbols rather than the actual circuit components.
How does electrical current flow in a circuit?
type of circuit
series and parallel
closed and open
