Bio food test
Benedict Test
What can be tested
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
Maltose
Lactose
Cannot be tested
Sucrose
Benedict Test is used to find if there is reducing sugar in the solution
How to performed the Benedict Test
1) Place 2cm³ of food sample into a test tube
2) Add 2cm³ of Benedict's solution to the food sample
3) Shake the mixture and place in boiling water bath for 2-3 mins
Test 1 (Reducing sugar is present)
The solution will turn [green/orange/brick-red] precipitate forms [trace/moderate/large] reducing sugar is present
1) Place 2cm³ of maltose into a test tube
2) Add 2cm³ of Benedict's solution to the food sample
3) Shake the mixture and place in boiling water bath for 2-3 mins
Test 2 ( Reducing sugar is absent)
If the solution remains blue that mean reducing sugar is absent
1) Place 2cm³ of sucrose into a test tube
2) Add 2cm³ of Benedict's solution to the food sample
3) Shake the mixture and place in boiling water bath for 2-3 mins
Ethanol Emulsion test
Ethanol Emulsion Test is find if there is fats present or absent
How to performed the Ethanol Emulsion test
1) Add 2cm³ of ethanol to a drop of liquid sample in a test tube and shake the mixture thorougly
2) Add 2cm³ of water of the mixture and shake the mixture.
Test 1 (Fats is absents )
Solution remains clear if fats is absents
Test 2 (Fats is present)
1) Crush the peanuts after crushing add it inside the test tube.
2) Add 2cm³ of ethanol into the test tube and shake thoroughly.
Cloudy white emulsion will formed when Fats are present
Biuret Test
How to performed the Biuret Test
1) Add 2cm³ of sodium hydroxide tp 2cm³ of food sample.
2) Add 1% copper(II) sulfate solution drop by drop.
3) Shaking after each drop.
Test 1 (Protein is present)
The solution will turns from blue to purple or violet when protein is present
1) Add 2cm³ of sodium hydroxide to 2cm³ of egg white
2) Add 1% copper(II) sulfate solution drop by drop.
3) Shaking after each drop
Test 2 (Protein is absents)
1) Add 2cm³ of sodium hydroxide tp 2cm³ of soda
2) Add 1% copper(II) sulfate solution drop by drop.
3) Shaking after each drop.
If the solution remains blue. Protein is absent
Biuret test is to find if there is protein in the solution
Iodine Test
How to performed the Iodine Test
1) place 2cm³ of food sample into the test tube 2) Add drops of idoine solution into the test tube
Test 1 (starch is absent)
1) Cutting up some pieces of orange and placing it into the test tube
2) Add drops of idoine into the test tube
The solution will remain yellowish-brown as starch is absent
Test 2 (Starch is present)
1) Place some pieces of cut up potato into the
test tube
2) Add drops of idoine solution into the test tube
The solution will turns from yellowish-brown to blue-black solution. Starch is present.
what are some starchy things that can be tested
potatoes or potato chips or hash browns
Bread
cheese
popcorn
Iodine is used for finding if there is there present in starch or absent in starch
