Challenges & Roadblocks
Engineers don't have experience working with PM and designers outside of dev handoff
Most engineers don't have competency, will, nor skill to have meaningful conversations outside of dev handoff
Focus on solution and not on problem
Completely derail conversation with questions that are not helpful nor relevant to current conversation
Comprehension issue of problem to solve
Projects rarely have long-term goal, and teams are set up for "short-term/one-time" redesign. After project is "done" for the one feature/flow that was redesigned, everyone moves onto a different project.
[JI-SOOK] CASE REFLECTION
(Outcome-Driven) Goals
Be regarded as a collaborative thought partner throughout process (user research, design, shipping, post-shipping, iterations)
Set a standard / be an example for team structure and process for future teams and projects
Engineers are excited to be considered thought partners and not executors of design
Create trust with PM and engineering teams
Risks
Collab with Engineers
Hurts revenue and customer satisfaction
Technical and design product debt
Ji-Sook seeks to cater / hedge / mitigate those risks by initiating small changes

Engineers are on different timeline and have different priorities than product/design to fix tech debt
Traditionally engineers are never involved in projects until closer to dev handoff
Most engineers are offshore, resulting in short window of time the hours overlap
"Transformation is coming" as of May, but will be months before effects of change will be seen on team level

SWOT
Problem to solve
: Collaboration with engineers is non-existent during projects, resulting in: A) Me not having the experience to grow in my career and stand out/be competent as a candidate for future roles B) Products missing opportunities for feasibility brainstorming and new ideas from eng. POV earlier on C) Products shipping with errors, resulting in negative client/user feedback, which risks client retention and company revenue D) No plan (monitoring KPIs, plans for iteration) after design is shipped
SOLUTIONING
Inspiration Cases - DesignDEV / DesignDevOps
Tactics / Reference Cases
Sponsors + Champions
Knowledge Sharing early with Engineers involved in that project
Share takeaways from interviews
Work with the PM, Researchers => SHare pain points -> Seek to understand what to prioritize + Create a roadmap with more clarity on this
Goal is that the Roadmap combines input from all 3: PM, ENG, Design
Start Sharing Lo-Fi designs with PM and ENGs
Exp: of criteria: Feasibility, get early feedback ideas on the design from an engineering perspective
Tell me more about the way engineers
Expected Results
Remove WASTE efforts
Remove some REWORK
Validate & Improve the design ideas
Desirability
Viability
Feasibility
One Lead Engineer, 1/2 Hands-on Engineers
One Woman: Just gimme the work.
JI-SOOK Want: Interact with her as a thought Partner
JI-SOOK wants: Build a working reklationship with her. Cold personality - perceived
[Investigation] [QUESTION] Who can help me understand what their work style expectations are? And WHY?
How do they work? How Many events?
Ackonwledge their concerns, speak their language, formats for the meetings and facilitation
What can I do to help you to help make our work efficient/etc/ make your life easier?
Is there anything I can do in the way we work together to make it easier for you?

Summary / Reflection - DELTA - END of 2nd Session
Start - General
End: Specific - Immediate Project - What can I act on?
Next Step: 1-on-1 with her (Engineer) -> Create a relationship
After the end of the interviews - Show her empathy
Have her tell you about her work, her day, her career
