11.02 CHANGES IN THE 17th CENTURY
1 POPULATION
A rising death in Europe put a stop to the population growth of the 15th and 16th centuries
In some areas, the number of inhabitants decreased
There were four main reasons for the high death rate
Poor harvests
Thier main econocmic activity was agriculture
They resulted in famines
Wars
Successive wars broke out
The Thirty years war ( 1618-1648)
English civil war (1642-1651)
Epidemics
Malnutrition caused by failed harvests and the effects of successive wars helped the plague to spread
This affected the weakest secotrs of society
Poor hygiene
Ineffective care also contributed to the spread of the plague
However, some hyginic measures, such as the use of quarantines and masks, became more widespread
2 SOCIETY
During the 17th century, there were major international wars
Severe economic problems, especially, in the farming sector
There were also political conflicts (social unrest and a series of popular revolts)
Many revolts protested military conscription and the fiscal policy of the monarchies
These increased taxes to finace theur armies and win wars
Tax revolts often coincided with food riots
The high price of bread led to urban revolts
Such as the one in Palermo (1647)
In rural areas, fiscal policy and oppression was caused by noblemen
They accumulated property by confiscating those of impoverished
This led to large peasant revolts
3 ECONOMY
ATLANTIC TRIANGULAR TRADE
This trading system operated from the late 16th to early 19th centuries
Chartered companies worked in and around the West Indies and the East Indies (India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Southeast Asia
They exchanged silver for spices
As a result, a triangular flow of trade was established in the Atlantic.
THE TEXTILE SECTOR
The textile sector evolved in a similar way as the agricultural sector
However, it performed better in the Atlantic region than in the Mediterranean
Poor harvests
Economic problems
