Carolingian empire
The Carolingian empire was a very big European empire ruled by Charlemagne, it’s king
As soon as Charlemagne died he inherited his kingdom to his sons, but they fought each other and other nobles which caused it to be attacked by the Vikings and fall, thus leading to Feudalism.
Charlemagne
Charlemagne ruled for almost 50 years
He created a golden age of knowledge
He was crowned emperor of the Romans by the pope himself
He created the trial by panel system and changed the ordeal system
He had 18 sons
When Charlemagne died he left a vacuum of leadership
Vacuum of leadership means that no one was as strong as Charlemagne to rule over the Carolingian Empire

Another part of Europe
They attacked and sacked small European villages
They eventually turned Christians and settled in Normandy
Normandy was a city in France where the Vikings eventually settled
They were very good ship builders

Pope Gregory I was the leader of the city of Rome
He made the monastic movement
Converted Germanic people into Christians
He was a pope

Saint Benedict
Saint Benedict was a monk who made the rules for all other monks to follow
He also made monks be forced to make 3 vows which where:
Chastity: that meant that they had to stay single
Obedience: this meant that they had to promise to obey the church and rules of the monastery
Poverty: to give up all their worldly goods
Monks
Monks were men who abandoned it all to become loyal followers of Christ and the lord
Where they lived
Monks lived in monasteries
Their leaders were called Abbots
Nuns
Nuns were the female equivalent of Monks and they lived in convents ruled by Abbeses instead of living in monasteries being rules by Abbots
Roman Empire
Splits into two in 395 CE
The Eastern Roman Empire
In the Eastern Roman Empire they spoke greek
The eastern Roman Empire fell in 1453 after Constantinople fell
Their capital was Constantinople
The Western Roman Empire
In the western Roman Empire they spoke Latin
This was caused by barbarians attacking Rome

Ordeal and Wergild
Ordeal
Ordeal is a divine test to see if you’re guilty or innocent
Example: if It was said I someone, they would put my hand in boiling water and if I was not burnt, I was not guilty. But if I was burnt, I was guilty
Wergild
Wergild is the money you compensate for a crime you committed
For example: if I broke someone’s leg, I would have to pay his family a certain amount of money to compensate for my crime
Ordeal and Wergild were created after the Romans and barbarians mixed
Germanic society
Germanic society was based on family and tradition
They were also called barbarians
Roman society
The Roman justice was based on citizens and laws
Magyars
The Magyars were people from Asia who settled down in what today is Hungary

Feudalism is a political system
The main goal of Feudalism was gaining protection from enemies
Vassals
Vassals were men who served a lord in exchange for something
Knights
Knights had great social prestige
They were dressed in mail and armed with swords
Horsemen had lances and these let them act as battering rams
Normandy
Normandy was an area in southern france near the Seine river where the Vikings settled
