Causes of WW1
Imperialism
The expansion of European nations as empires (also known as imperialism) can be seen as a key cause of World War I, because as countries like Britain and France expanded their empires, it resulted in increased tensions among European countries.
Nationalism
Nationalism contributed to WWI by creating competition and tensions between nations, as each sought to assert their independence and power. This led to a complex web of alliances and rivalries that contributed to the outbreak of the war.
The Arms Race
Between 1909 and the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Britain launched a further 19 dreadnoughts (i.e., turbine-powered all-big-gun warships) and a further nine battle cruisers, while Germany launched 13 dreadnoughts and five battle cruisers. This arms race is often cited as one of the causes of World War I.
The Triple Alliance, The Triple Entente and smaller alliances such as Belgium-UK
After Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia came to Serbia's aid. This led to Germany joining the war to defend Austria-Hungary and then France and England joining to defend Russia. Due to the alliance system, a war between two nations turned into war throughout an entire continent.
