ObCD Initiation and Design
Occupational Constructs
Occupational Choice
Insight into decision-making beyond only personal attributes
Contextual factors considered. Action is influenced by:
Occupational Potential
Understanding ability to perform tasks (do what is needed)
Reaching full potential within constraints
Appropriateness of Use
Limited opportunities to engage in Health-promoting activities
Lack of agency (does not question their limited choice)= promotion of occupational engagement is not seen
Context constraints as well as assumptions about available possibilities= constrained Occupational potential development
Purpose of campaign
Expand horizons: Opportunities to test participation interests
Encourage transformation: Future engagement in occupations
Habitus (semi-conscious attitude to the world shaped by society)
Capital: economic/symbolic factors that influence a person's social position)
Doxa: assumptions held that is understood without stating it
Propensity: likelihood of becoming something without value restriction (natural tendancy)
Capability: Possibility of becoming something if the person chooses to excersise their power
Capacity: actual ability to become
Alternative Constructs
Occupational Identity
Identity: Self-achieved, not externally given
Choice not only based on personal desires BUT Influence of context on choices
Assessment Findings: who Learners are as occupational beings and the character of their context
Occupational Consciousness
Awareness of hegemony dynamics (rankings based on wealth, income, education, family background, power)
Dominant practices sustained by what people do everyday, has an Impact on personal and collective well-being
Occupational Possibilities
Activities expected and belief they should do are encouraged and endorsed by systems/structures
Assessment Findings: Limited engagement opportunities
Learners are expected to amount to little
Governmentality: how people are made subjects to influence behaviour toward achieving specific goals
Theoretical Practices
General Framework Principles (Galvaan & Peters, 2016)
Equal worth of all humans; deep appreciation
Collective identification of needs by exploring different perspectives
Reflect and learn from experience and action to apply learnt lesson to future actions
Practice 1: Applying theories that support conceptualization of the need
Principles:
Occupation as means and ends
Shape intervention design:
Understanding occupational performance and experience
Use occupational constructs to aid understanding of focus for intervention
Practice 2: Planning and selecting Strategies to meet the needs
Principles:
Design based on occupational science constructs based on the needs that emerged
Discuss and incorporate potential occupations
Test possibilities through participation
Engage stakeholders and explore alternatives
Structure occupation performance with contextual relevance
Direct participant involvement in as many aspects of the design
Promote social inclusion so that opportunities for advocacy are created
Reflect on assumptions informing beliefs and actions related to performance to create awareness about strenghts and growth areas
Practice 3: Accessing Resources to meet needs
Principles:
Collaborate with participants to identify networks to ensure access to resources
Communicate with potential partners the intentions and strategies employed in the campaign
Critical Questions for the Design phase
