ASSESSMENT

Knee, hip, hand or spine involvement

Risk factors - age >50yrs, female, obesity, genetic factors
Examine - Stiffness, bony swelling/joint deformity, effusion, tenderness, crepitus, antalgic gait, muscle wasting or weakness
Activity related joint pain/Morning stiffness lasts no longer than 30mins, >45yrs age
MANAGEMENT/FOLLOW UP

Consider referral to Orthopaedic surgeon if non surgical management is unsuitable or ineffective after 3 months

INVESTIGATION
X-ray not routinely recommended. Consider X-ray based on clinical judgement and if worsening symptoms
Serum CRP (elevated inflammatory markers may also be associated with age, increase weight & other conditions)
ESR (elevated inflammatory markers may also be associated with age, increase weight & other conditions)
