Creating a flexible organisation 2.0
Importance of job specialisation
less time is wasted on changing operations
the more specialized the job the more easier training is
When an individual has to learn 1 specific task to learn, they can learn it better when the job is specialized
Disadvantages
: boredom and dissatisfaction employees may feel due to repeating the same task
The job is too large for 1 person hence why job specialization is needed
Committees and task forces
Standing committee:
a rather permanent group tasked with carrying out a regular set of tasks. eg. a budget review committee established to review departmental budget requests on an ongoing basis
Task force:
a committee established to investigate a major problem or pending decision. eg. a committee established to assess the pros and cons of a merger with another company
Ad hoc committee:
created for a specific short-term purpose & once its achieved, committee is disbanded.eg. a committee established for reviewing the business’s employee benefits plan
Strategies to minimize the likelihood of conflict between line-and-staff managers
Ensure that line managers and staff managers have clear responsibilities.
Hold both line and staff managers accountable for the results of their activities.
Integrate line and staff managers into one team.
Types of corporate culture
Mercenary:
employees are focused and determined to win. Thrive on competitive energy.
Fragmented:
suggests that employees do not necessarily become friends but have a high degree of autonomy, flexibility and equality. Employees consider themselves to be working at the organisation & not for it
Networked:
(relaxed and informal environment) there's a strong commitment & feelings of loyalty to the organisation, characterised by a base of trust and friendship among employees
Communal:
(positive traits of networked and mercenary culture are combined). Friendship, high focus on performance & high energy contribute to the organisation, resulting in an environment where success by everyone is celebrated by all.
