What is the best method to classify a chemical substance? - Coggle Diagram
What is the
best
method to
classify
a
chemical substance
?
The
best
method could be the quickest or the cheapest. The tests also need to be accessibe for a school lab setting.
Characteristics of chemical substances
Types
Physical Characteristics
Soluability
Density
Melting and boiling point
State of matter:
Solid, liquid or gas
Colour
Chemical Characteristics
pH levels
Specific heat capacity
- the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree Celcius
Reactivity
Termal conductivity
Ionic, covalent bonding and metallic state
Tests
Room temperature test + observation test
A simple room temperature observation test provides information such as state of matter and colour. Odour and taste may be tested but it might not be safe
pH levels
Using pH strips would be a good way to measure the pH levels but a limitation to this would be that pH testing solids and gasses is impossible
Density
A density test can be run on solids and liquids by using the formula
Density = Mass / Volume
or a hydrometer could be used. To test the density for gas, a baloon can be filled with the gas to a certain volume and then the mass of the gas can be calculated by weighing the baloon. However, this could be very tedious and time-consuming.
Electrical conductivity
Electrical conductivity can be tested with probes and a meter.
Boiling and metling point test
Covalent bonds have lower boiling and melting points
