How William Takes Control of and Changes England
The harrying of the north
this was a brutal but affective way of saying that he wasn't going to take rebellions and that he was there to stay
the harrying of the north was when William let all the rebellions escape to the north thinking that they were safe but it was all a trap and he put salt in the fields up north so that no crops would be grown and they would eventually surrender or die of hunger
Feudal System
William introduced the feudal system so that instead of paying his knights and barons in cash, he gave them pieces of land .
in return these barons had to remain loyal to william or he would take it away
He gave a lot of land to the church to show his unwavering loyalty
the feudal system had 4 tiers - king - barons - knights - peasants
they all took different oaths to protect or serve the country
the king was ruling everyone and was at the top so he didn't have to do much
the barons managed large pieces of land and raise an army whenever the king told them
the knights had smaller pieces of land and had to fight for the king
peasants had tiny pieces of land that they did not own but just worked on and worked long shifts.
Domesday Book
the domesday book was a nation wide survey that went down to the last detail about every piece of land
this helped him as it told him everything he needed to know about his new territory
castles
william built castles for all occasions
His uses for the castles
trade
Lincoln Castle - it was built to take control of trade in the trade capital
defense
Pickering - Castle
He built this so that he would not get any attacks while he was sleeping
he also built tis for any soldiers who were fighting rebellions
Castles were big strong fortresses that he used for different purposes
William built a new type of castles
these were called motte and bailey
a motte was a large mound of dirt which was used for high ground if there was an invasion
a Bailey was a centre court yard where most things happened
there was also another key part which was called the keep
the keep was a little house on top of the mound where the most important people were and where they slept
