Speech and Language
Speech: production of vocal sounds
Language: Communication system, Content (Vocabulary), Form (Grammar), Function/Pragmatic use of language (asking questions, sharing informoation)
Speech Disorders
Articulation (Disortions of speech sounds), Fluency (Stuttering), voice and resonance (Loudness, nasality)
Language Disorders
Expressive Language, Receptive Language, Pragmatic Language
Red Flags
Age at which 90% of typically developing children have attained the skill
Loss of language or social skills, does not respond to sounds
Etiology Speech Disorders
Hearing impairment, genetic conditions, neglect and abuse, neurologic conditions
Speech and Language Disorders
May occur in isolation, may occur as part of broader development disorder
Common Issues
Isolated Hearing Impairment
Trouble producing certain sounds, rely on visual cues, good nonverbal communication and social interactions
Global developmental Delay/Intellectual Disability
Prevalent in people age 5+ with impaired intellectual adaptive skills
Expect immature understanding, vocab, grammar and use of langauge
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Typically impairments in social communication, social interaction, and restricted repetitive patterns of bheaviour
Non-verbal behaviours: Abnromal eye contact, lack of poiting, poor understanding of gestures, poorly integrated verbal/nonverbal communications
Failure fo back and forth conversation
Restricted/repetitive patterns of behaviour and restricted interests
Cerebrtal Palsy
Disorders of movement and posture, may have asspciated cognitive difficulties
Oral motor invovlevment (Dysarthria), expect other motor difficutlies
Specific language impariment
Trouble learning and using language, language abilities below expected level
May have trouble finding words, understanding words/sentences
