When on the island the experiences a scenes if isolation due to the location and secrtivity of the insitutuion
Paranoid and Uncertainty
The main plot - 'The missing patient, mysteries of the institution and uncertainty of the turth' leads Teddy down a dark path which heightens his sense of isolation
The many character Teddy Daniels (played by Leonard Decaprio) experiences loneliness as he deals with his past life (His experience from WWII and his troubles with his wife)

Isolation
The location in both texts show the gothic theme isolation. In the outsiders the location of the castle which is away from civilisation in a desolate and eerie setting, this shows represents isolation. In the movie shutter island the island represents isolation as it is many kilometres away from inhabited land. This isolated the patient and staff from the modern world and what is happening in the world. Both the main protagonist in the film and the short story experience and show isolation. In the short story the creature experiences isolation due to being stuck in the castle. Teddy Daniels from the film experience mental isolation and physical isolation. His mental isolation is due his passed traumas and denial of this truam. His physical trauma comes from ending being stuck on island without realising.

The Setting - The psychic ward is located on an isolated island.
- There is only one entrance to get on and off the island which is controlled by people in charge of the institution

The mental institution itself represents 'confident and solitude' as it is a place where people with mental problems are isolated from the rest of the world. This further alters there mental problems
Patients in the mental institution experience profound isolation which further develops there mental instability
Dr Crawly experience the gothic element "Loneliness and Isolation" due to the remoteness of the mental institution meaning he has limited connection to the medical system off the island

Frankenstein
The Monster
As soon as Frankenstein's monster has been created he is discarded and screamed at. Left alone at "Birth"
The monster suffers from self isolation. From fear of the reactions of people he hides himself away, creating a larger longing for love and companionship through the isolation that he has created due to his appearence
The isolation of personal appearance has created a boundary that cannot be solved. Because he is created with such unusual features, and is not considered normal, he is shunned from society.
During the monsters stay at the DeLacey's family the monster learnt about human interaction, love, and relationships. After learning how the world worked he learns how the world does not show him the interactions that the DeLacey family has been given.

As the monster excels into understanding humans, their languages, their knowledge, and their understanding, he begins to understand why society hates him and why he is isolated. This makes his isolation much more destressing.
Acts of violence eventually become a way for the monster to gather the attention of Victor. He hopes that Victor will create some sign of companionship or that the acts of violence will allow Victor to take responsibility.

As Victors adopted sister and later wife/fiance Elizabeth experiences the gothic element and Loneliness and isolation due Victor isolation and separating himself from her and his family.
She longs for his return by his absence leaves her isolated and anxious. The element is further emphasised/shown by her tragic fate

Robert Walton
Alll thought not a prominatant chacreter through the story Walton still experience the gothic element isolation during his expedition to the articic. This is because no one else on the joinery shares the same goals, thought and ideas as him. He longs for a "Companion". Even thought there are tens of people on the journey they aren't in the same class as him

Isolation
Isolation effects both Victor Frankenstein and his creation. During his studies Victor isolated himself from friends and family to pursue his studies. Victor suffers from serious withdrawal from society as he comes to terms with the monster he has created. The monster suffers from Isolation due to his appearance and as he discovers that the world is not ready for a soul like him. Alice feels an isolation as she goes through Wonderland, a journey through her self realization. Feeling isolated due to the world not being ready for a women of such self confidence and intellegence
Loneliness
Alice spends much of the film feeling isolated and alienated by the world that surrounds her, as she goes through Wonderland (a metaphor for her self realization and discovery) she feels extreme loneliness, even though surrounded by so many. Victor finds himself suffering from loneliness after he spends much of his life isolated pursuing research finding himself alone after pushing away many relationships. The Monster finds out that he will remain lonely for the rest of his life after he is attacked due to his appearance and therefore creating a life of loneliness

Alice
Alice has conflicting views with the adults of Power in her life which show that she is questioning the rules of society

Isolation
Both Characters of the text suffer of experiencing an unknown land and an unknown journey that ends in a realisation of who they are in the world. Where they stand, how the should be seen. Although in the case of the Outsider it is a much more sad and upsetting reality
Loneliness
Both characters suffer from loneliness in their texts. The Outsider feels alone because of his isolation and his distance from society. He lives in a castle, dark and cold. Creating a strong sense that he is alone. Whereas Alice is surrounded by characters, yet still feels this overwhelming sense of loneliness as she doesn't know who she is. And this creates this terrible feeling that she is alone
Mad hatter

- Both Whimsical and poignant.
- His colourful appearance hides his sadness and darkness.
- He is trapped in an everlasting tea party and has lost his grasp on time
- He longs for the connection he had with alice when she was younger

Experience isolation and loneliness that is self-imposed.

The Outsider
The Narrtor
Physical Isolation is experienced and shown through setting. He lives in a castle that is described as being in a state of decay and abandonment
The Narrator shows signs of existential crisis. "I know always that I am an outsider; a stranger in this century and among those who are still men."
Emotional Desolation: The Narrator struggles with the sense of being an outsider, he suffers intense feelings of loneliness and willing to be accepted by society

Loneliness
Both characters suffer from loneliness due to their appearance. However it seems that Frankenstein's monster has to isolate himself from society because of the reactions that he has faced. Whereas it seems that for the Outsider, he did not intentionally isolate himself. Through the isolation they are found in extreme loneliness. No friends, No one to trust.
Isolation
Both the Outsider and Frankenstein's monster are both isolated due to their appearance. The Outsider feels isolated due to his appearance and discovers that he is destine to a life of isolation. Whereas Frankenstein's monster struggles with his isolation after discovering that people hate him for his appearance.

The moon represent the idea of enlightment, but the closer it got to the light the more it was exposed to rejection and fair. It is irony as usually light represents good things by in this case it is used to show that things may appear good by in reality they are not
