Poland's defeat:
By the end of September 1939, Poland was defeated. Under the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1938, Germany acquired 188,000km2 of Polish territory, containing 2 million Jews.
Himmler let Einsatzgruppen and other SS units massacre large numbers of Poles. Many army leaders disliked the killings and were anxious to escape responsibility for them, but Hitler's sympathies were with the SS and the police.
By November 1939, Hitler had freed the army from virtually any role in the administration of Poland.
