Long Term Weaknesses of Liberal Italy

Political problems

Economic problems, leads to social to political

Social Problems

Lack of unity

Divisions because of lack of unity

Lack of unity

divisions in geographical,
religious and social lines

Since there was no sense of Nationalism

Different countries considered themselves the most important region

Divisions because of lack of unity

In the South people were living in poverty, while up north they were getting industrialized

Different perspectives, not under the same accord

The Catholic Church

It started to divide their relations with the State, this process was exacerbated because of anti-clerical policies so Catholics were urged not to vote

Middle and upper classes domination

Only they elite were able to vote

The government was only conformed by them and worried only about their needs

Created unrest in the lower class -> working class movements -> creating a new party = PSI

4 political parties that referred to 4 different groups

Most politicians voted for closing down the PSI

The Italy-Turkish war led to further economical issues -> bc of the Nationalists

This caused discomfort in the PSI and they denied to participate

An outlook for war with the Futurist Movement, expansionism

Nationalists, liberalists wanted "their" lands back from Austria, PSI and the Catholic Party opposed -> little to gain against a fellow catholic state

The War against Austria happened which led to huge losses and it made Italy more politically divided -> resenting the Liberal Government

Others resented the PSI's anti war stance

Because of war there were more workers needed and PSI, they were militant after the war
