Coniferous or Evergreen
Keeps its leaves all year round (except Larch)
Wood is called Softwood
Light colour
Seeds are in pine cones
Grows quickly (20-30 yrs)
Wood is usually cheaper
Wood is usually softer and less durable
Needle-like leaves
Deciduous
Loses its leaves in Autumn (except holly)
Wood is called Hardwood
Usually darker in colour
Broad leaves
Seeds borne in nuts/berries
Slow growing (80-100 yrs)
Wood is more expensive
Wood is harder and more durable

The Boreal Forest or Great Coniferous
Belt. Situated in the Northern hemisphere.
Large Coniferous forests where they are managed and replanted.
These countries export softwood and plywood/chipwood
Most of the worlds paper comes from here

Occurs above and below the Equator
Broad leafed deciduous forests
Deforestation is the cutting down of forests
Timbers great advantage as a fuel and material is
that it is renewable but we must replant as we use
