Classic study- Rosenhan
aim: investigate life in psych hospital to check rel of diag
procedure: 8 pseudopts (3f5m) no history of mh problems
called 1/12 hospitals, reported hearing voices “empty, hollow, thud”
stopped producing symptoms once admitted, bhvd normally + answered all qs
took notes abt hospital, tried to convince staff of sanity, daily visitors reporting sanity
results: 11/12 admitted, 7/8 admitted w sz diag, all discharged w sz in remission
avg time spent 19 days
staff treated them in line w diag- note taking=writing bhvr
ignored by nurses 88% time, 2% gave verbal response, no qs answered out of 185
follow up study: staff asked probability of patients being pseudo, 193 assessed, 19 judged false by at least 2 staff, but none were pseudos
conclusion: diag processes like dsm lead to inaccurate outcomes, invalid as fail to detect insanity in pts
bhvr after diag is interpreted in relation to label- perception of pt changed = self fulfilling
