PISA
70 countries participate and it takes place every 3 years, testing numeracy, literacy and science
2/3 UK students are unhappy with constant testing (toxic childhood)
WC students are still underperforming- social policy is failing but nothing is being done
Oates- can benchmark standards internationally. Can assess whether the taxpayer is getting value for money, and can take policy ideas from other countries who are performing well
however has led to moral panics, dubbed PISA panics, as parents are concerned about low places on international league tables. These panics are often misfounded as the reliability of PISA testing has been questioned.
WC students are also consistently underperforming, so social policy is failing to react (benchmarking isn't working)

New Labour targets of getting 50% of students into university to compete in the global labour market
National Numeracy and Literacy Strategies- 2hrs a day on numeracy and literacy to perform better
Gove wanting to add rigour to the primary and secondary schooling curriculum- led to expansion of free schools and academies
However, Kelly- this has meant education only has an economic purpose as opposed to trying to improve the life chances of British students- UK has a global economy so must produce a Work force capable of competing globally- it is just a way of maintaining UKs position as an advanced economy
2023- Sunak proposed the advanced British standard to gain more depth in English and maths skills to compete in the international economy
Globalisation and the impact on curriculum
Holborn- multicultural curriculum, learning is teaching beyond the white christian dominant culture
e.g. RE teaches six world religions, History teaches oppression of minorities
However, there has been a renewed emphasis on British values as if they are unique to other country's values, and students are given little platform to challenge these British institution
Although, British values still emphasise tolerance and increase migration as a result of globalisation has led to discourse over decolonising the curriculum
