Evaluation of theories
Internal Virtues of Theories
Five internal virtues
Testability
Generality
Explanatory cooperation
Simplicity
Entrenchment
To see if it makes sense is to COMPARE the theory with other theories in mind ,both in the individual's mind and in the collective mind of a group
To evaluate the internal features of a theory is to think about it and see if it makes sense before spending a good time and money on the experiments to test it.
2 criteria for justification of theories:
Likelihood of being true .
Accessible for evaluation
This is where justifying theories begins
Internal virtues are important internal features of theories that are truth-conducive
External Virtues of Theories
Virtues in justifying theories
Partly similar to internal virtues, but focused on evidences.
2 external Virtues are:
Explanation
Good theory should be able to explain some observed phenomena
Testing and confirmation
Conclusion
1.Scientific knowledge relies heavily upon empirical evidence
2.Empirical-quantitative and qualitative data
3.All scientific ideas must conform to observational or experimental data to be considered valid
