RENAISSANCE
The Golden Age of Drama, Elisabethan Plays
- London - was the city of entrainment (Southwark area in particular, where there were theatres ➞ playhouse)
- Elizabethan theatres: - open air structures with a square stage - groundlings (people who stood around it) - interacting with the actors - the richest members sat along roofed benches that surrounded the stage. The stage was covered by a roof called heaven and had balcony.
- The audience: all the social strata of Elizabethan society.
- Playwrights: - the importance of the teste of the audience - modest background -actors with university degree
- Actors: - women were not allowed to act, immoral - (were considered vagabonds) forced to organised in companies (for protection) ➞ professional acting companies - shareholders of their companies.
- The mise en scene : - bare stages and basic costumes - night scenes made white props - open air spaces - no artificial darkness - language important role.
- The continuity with the medieval tradition: - mix of tradition and innovation - 2 features: mix of tragedy and comedy (tragicomedy)/ no time, space, unities of actions (of Aristotle). -free approach to poetic composition -followed the natural rhythm of life and imagination (avoid rigid categorisations) - main plot connected to more subplots - different places - fluid time frame
