Rivers key deffimitions
Tributary-a stream or small river which flows into a main river
Drainage basin-an area of land by a river
Evaporation-the change from a liquid to a gas
Waterfall-the sudden (often vertical) drop in a river
Porous-rock that has space between it's particles
Deposition-the dropping material carried by rivers
Transportation-the movement of eroded material from one place to anther
Transpiration-the flow of water vapour from plants into the air
Impermeable-rock that does not allow water to soak in to it
Flood plain-the flat land around a river which gets flooded when the river overflows
The source-where a river begins
Levees-raised banks either side of the river channel, caused by deposition of sediment during a flood
Meander-a bend in a river
Weathering-the breakdown and decay of rock
Erosion-the wearing away of the land by river
Width-the distance from one river bank to the other
Depth-the distance from the surface of the water to the bed
Velocity-the speed the water is flowing
Discharge-the amount and rate of water movement in the channel
Gradient-a measure of how steep the river is
