Climate change
Ocean pH
The increased CO2 in the air (greenhouse gas) has been causing the ocean to become more acidic. The ocean's change in pH can affect its organisms' behaviour and surival.
Deforestation
Deforestation occurs from logging (chopping down trees to sell wood), clearing land to build roads, and more. Trees absorb CO2, which gets released when they are cut down.
Greenhouse gas
Greenhouse gas emissions have significantly increased since industrialisation, most of which were produced from burning fossil fuels. It has been warming up the Earth overtime.
Crime
Domestic violence
In the past 5 years, domestic violence has increased by 60%. Tragically, children are often present when domestic violence occurs, about 2/3 of the time. It is estimated for domestic violence to rise by 35% in 2025.
Child abuse
Though New Zealand is a developed country, it has one of the highest rates of child abuse. According to www.childmatters.org.nz, a child dies every 5 weeks from abuse.
Theft
Types of theft include shoplifting, robbery, fraud, etc. There has been a significant rise in shoplifting which may have been caused by increased cost of living and lack of funds. 82% of retailers have been affected by shoplifting.
Pollution
Ocean pollution
Ocean pollution can include rubbish and chemical contamination. Chemical contamination can increase agal blooms that produce toxins in the water. Rubbish contamination is mainly plastic, and is often litter that makes its way to the ocean.
Recycling awareness
We should recycle as much as we can to help save the planet. Recycle Kiwi has introduced 4 R's to guide us with recycling - Refuse (single use or contributing to more waste), Reduce (waste produced), Reuse, and Recycle (converting waste into other things).
Ball (non-issue)
Ball is approaching and is on July 10th (First week of the holidays). An entry ticket costs $100 per person and partners from outside the school must sign an additional slip. The theme is A Night on the Red Carpet.
Students vaping
There has been an increased number of students in school vaping. Vaping can lead to cancer, chronic bronchitis, anxiety, etc. Teach students the side effects of vaping and ways to stop addiction.
National changing free lunches
Labour introduced the healthy school lunches programme, but National is going to cut half of its funding since changing government. The average cost of each lunch used to be $8.28.
Blood donation (non-issue)
There are students and teachers that are eligible to donate blood to help those with blood-related diseases, cancer, or injuries. The minimum age is 16 and the donor must be at least 50kg and 150cm.
Donate to charities (non-issue)
There are many charities in need of donations to help their cause. I could discuss different charities to help people donate to them. Epilepsy NZ, Childfund NZ, First Foundation, etc.
