Tariff
Northern states supported the tariff because they thought by raising taxes on imported goods, Americans would be more likely to buy them because they seem American-made.
Southern states did not support the tariff because they didn't want to pay more for imported goods and thought Great Britain would stop buying raw materials from the South.

Sectionalism
Europe stopped trade with the u.s. so the north started making most of the goods but the put high taxes on these goods. It was also because more states were being added to the union.
Sectionalism is when states split and change their ways of doing something, like agricultural ways, for example.
The regions split because the North wasn't so great for growing crops while the South had fertile soil and long growing seasons which is why the North went into the industrial manufacturing.

Abraham Lincoln pushed the idea that having enslaved people could stay in the South but should not expand to any new territories.

States Rights

The Northern Abolitionists were upset by the Fugitive Slave Act because Southerners were looking to leave the United States of America and create their own Confederate States with the promise of states Rights and the continuation of the institution of having enslaved people.
During the war and after they recognized the need for a federal government to unite and protect them, but each state created its own laws for its citizens.

Slavery
Enslaved people were discriminated against because cruelty was what the slaveholders were supposed to be showing but being kind had to be earned.
Abolitionist groups were an extension of the church because to them it was a god given right for freedom and happiness. So, it was religious.

Southerners were upset about the novel because Stowe experienced stuff there and the southerners didn't want to have a bad reputation.

Industry VS Agriculture
Southern region was perfect for agriculture but not the North which is why the North had factories for profit.
