Industry vs. Agriculture
The Northern workforce has free labors. Free labors are paid very low and can come and go to any jobs of their choosing
The Southern workforce buys slaves and gave them no rights because they don't believe in doing their own work
In the south you needed good climate to be able to have a good harvest season. With out a good climate the crops would die.

New states caused regional division because if a new state was added and allowed slavery it was contribute to the Democrats, but if another was a free state it would contribute to the Whig party, and it would be unbalanced but they wanted to compromise.
Sectionalism is overemphasized political, economic, and social loyalty to a region of a country rather than the country as a whole
