States Rights
The 10th amendment says any power or rights that are not on the Constitution belong to the federal government, states, or the people of the United States.
The Fugitive Slave Act upset Northerners because they wanted to free slaves and not capture them. If they did not listen to this either they would be punished.
The federal government created the idea that there are federal powers and state powers but these powers sometimes will overlap. The purpose of the federal government was to have a higher power of government during this time.

Slavery
Enslaved people did not have many rights and were discriminated against because ti was a a way of southerners life. They were not allowed to vote and not allowed to leave the place they were born in unless freed by their owners.
A cash crop is a raw material grown on a large farm that is meant to be put in a market to make profit off of the material
Abolitionist groups were an extension of the church because they were fighting against the institution of the enslavement of people

Sectionalism

New states caused regional division because the Northerners had increased power and states felt like it was becoming unfair and they should be on their own.
The Southern region had long growing season and fertile soil. This led to having plantations with slaves. The North had rocky soil and industrialization with free laborers. This was part of the reason of why the states felt divided because of the resources that they had.

The Southern states were against tariffs because they did not want to pay higher prices for goods and they thought that Britain would stop buying their raw materials because of the tariffs

Industry v. Agriculture
Northern Workforce had factories and free laborers and the Southern Workforce had plantations with slaves working for free but they were not free laborers. The South had long growing seasons and fertile soil which led to having plantations and the North had many industries and factories.
The climate played a very important part in the southern region. In the south there were a lot of farms and plantations, if the climate was perfect for nurturing and growing crops then the south would have good crops and then their economic activity would be very good

The Fugitive Slave Act was a law saying that if you were a free person and found a runaway slave you had to capture them and return them back. If you did not do this you would be punished.
When the novel came out people started to realize the way that slaves were being treated and people started to become abolitionists. Southerners became mad at the novel saying that Stowe knew nothing about slavery. Northern abolitionists organizations began receiving more calls for the outlaw of slavery.
Southerners were angry with the novel because they said Stowe was a Northerner who knew nothing about slavery and people started becoming abolitionists and wanting to outlaw slavery.

Election of 1860
Only 6.9 million Americans were eligible to vote even though at this time there was a population of more than 31 million people in America. Only free men were able to vote. Enslaved people and women were not allowed to.

Lincolns thoughts on slavery were very different from Southerners. Lincoln wanted to outlaw slavery. He thought it was wrong yet he was not an abolitionist.
