Should Zoos and Aquariums Exist?
Hook
“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”
There are currently over 8,700 animal species living in zoos and aquariums right now.
"If you want to understand how animals live, you don't go to the zoo, you go to the jungle" - Martin Lindstrom
Thesis Statement
Animals should not live in zoos and aquariums because they suffer in captivity, they are mistreated and they can lose their instinct.
Specialized Info
Zoos and aquariums maintain a collection of animals and they are usually kept in areas that are too small for them
Zoo and aquarium animals are studied at zoos and watched for their behavior
Animals lose their instinct
When animals are kept at zoos and aquariums, after staying there for a while, they start to lose their sense of their real habitat
Zoo and aquarium animals sometimes get something called "Zoochosis", which means they start forgetting where they came from and they get bored and depressed.
Animals often start to forget where they came from and sometimes when they get sent back out into the wild they don't know how to take care of themselves.
Animals are mistreated
Some zookeepers and aquarium staff can stress and scare the animals which make them shy and ancy if their not being respectful to them.
Animals don't get the same food they would sometimes get in their real habitat, which they need for their nutrients and health.
Workers at zoos and aquariums try to tame and teach the animals by forcing them to do things they sometimes cannot do physically without knowing it.
