France and Germany remain hostile
because in the process of German unification Prussians defeated France
seized the territories of Alsace-Lorraine.

Second German Empire was Europe’s main industrial and economic power
it claimed its own colonial territories.

Triple Alliance
1882
formed by Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary.
Italy later abandoned
but Ottoman empire and Bulgaria join in
Triple Entente
1907
formed by Russia, France and Great Britain
also the colonial empires

Italy ended up joining the Triple Entente
other movements NOT important
Belgium, Serbia and Montenegro --> invaded by Germany and Austria-Hungary,
United States entered the war in 1917 ( decisive role )
Romania and Greece joined
Japan declared war on Germany
