Town of Ypres stood on the most direct route to the Channel Ports, Calais and Dunkirk. Essential for British control so that the BEF could be supplied with food, men and equipment
Ypres salient was a vulnerable part of the Allied line. German held a superior position; high ground, better trenches. Unlike the British who occupied low-ground, making their defences visible to the German army and their trenches were easily water-logged and flooded.
