normal data
anatomy
- head and neck of the pancreas are closely related to the duodenum
- papilla: where the pancreatic duct and the bile duct merge and release their secretion in the duodenum
- tail: in contact with the spleen
- vessels: the most relevant anatomical relation with pancreatic cancer surgery
histology
- exocrine structures: acinar cells that synthesize and secrete digestive enzymes into the ducts
- endocrine islets: constituted by beta cells (insulin), alpha cells (glucagon), delta cells (somatostatin), PP cells (pancreatic polypeptide) and epsilon cells (ghrelin)
- pancreatic ducts: they receive acinar secretions; here the ductal adenocarcinoma may arise
acinar cells produce digestive enzymes, ingluding trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, elastase, lipase, amylase, phospholipase, nuclease
