The children were selected if they had no major birth defects, their mother had given them up for adoption, had a diagnosis and consistent symptoms of schizophrenia and no other diseases. The psychiatric status of each participant’s father was not checked but none were known to be hospital patients. 58 participants were left in the experimental group and a control group was matched on sex, type of eventual placement and length of time in care. In the follow-up method, data on each participant’s psychiatric status was gathered via psychiatric hospital records, school records and police records. Three psychiatrists, including Heston, evaluated the data collected on each participant via standardised interviews, IQ tests and MMPI to confirm a diagnosis of schizophrenia. A score of 1-100 was assigned to each participant regarding psycho-social disability where scores below 75 indicate psychiatric symptoms becoming troublesome
