Physics - Light
What is Light?
Consists of transverse waves; the electromagnetic vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of travel

Reflection
-
Specular reflections happen when rays of light are reflected from a very smooth surface like a mirror

Key Vocab

Retina
contains cells that can detect light and colour. sensitive to light that is too bright and can be damaged
-
-
-
-
Iris has muscles that can open or close the iris. when very bright, iris will mostly be closed and only a small part of the pupil will be seen. to protect retina from damage. when dark, opposite hapens. Iris will mostly be open to allow more light to reach the retina
Convex Lens
-
Because of this, rays of light refract by different amounts depending on where they hit the lens
-
Refraction
-
The higher the refractive index, the slower light travels through the material
-
Diagram
as light passes from air into glass, it slows down = the refractive index of glass is more than the refractive index of air
The light refracts and chages direction, bending towards the normal.
-
as light exits the glass block, the oppisite happens
air has lower refractive index than glass, so speeds up and refracts away from the normal
-
-
If the angle of incidence is 0°, then light would continue (but slower) in the same direction
-
Cameras
Pinhole camera
-
consists of a box, with a small hole in one end and a 'screen' at another
