Suburbanization
This mainly increased in the 1970s. As urbanisation increases, city centres become overcrowded and people desire more space. Improvements in transport links mean people can live further away and commute to work. Wealthy mc people move to the suburbs where there is a better quality of life. Those who are left are poorer and may include foreign immigrants. This can lead to economic and ethnic segregation.
Urban change
Deindustrialization meant many became structurally unemployed (specifically in the east) as the economy became tertiary and quaternary focused.
Arrangement
Founded on a narrow part of the Thames were a bridge could be built. Housing developed in ribbon developments. Once these became full the spaces within the ribbon developments started to fill. In the 1940s there was concern over the rapid growth which led to the development of green belts (areas of open space were development is strictly controlled.) Since then urban expansion has been better controlled. There are varied centres of the city because of the many burghs, meaning it is considered a postmodern western city. The characteristics are not uniform across London, there are different built environments, land uses, population characteristics and senses of place.
IMF
The river Thames became central to industry. Therefore wc housing was developed along the river, moving eastwards. This is why the west is largely wealthier than the east.
inequality
London was home to a diverse set of industries. However due to global shift hundreds of thousands of Londoners lost their jobs. There has now been a shift to higher skilled jobs. However, this has created mass structural unemployment.
