ESSAY PLAN ; Racism
Iago
-
-
-
"it is true, or else I am a Turk".
Casual racism. This could be linked to FYNES MORYSON ; "Moors are so credulous, that they will believe anything told to them, no matter how fantastical".
Iago's name derives from "Saint Iago", a Spanish saint known for being a "Moor-killer".
Shakespeare encourages this association when employing phrases like "Diablo" to come from Iago's lips.
HOWEVER...
I don't believe racism was Iago's main motive. He's only heavily racist in the beginning of the play and this is most probably to ensure Roderigo isn't suspicious of Iago's motives and in order to get Roderigo to join Iago in his crimes.
Othello

Internalised Racsim
-
"Her name, that was fresh / As Dian's visage, is now begrimed and black / As mine own face".
Contextual
Shakespeare lived in a very racist time period - while Africans (and other minorities) were presented in culture, they were still heavily marginalised within society.
