During my adolescence and young adulthood, the influence of mainstream Western culture posed a significant threat to my practice of Bhangra dancing and listening to Punjabi music, impacting my physical development in various ways. Bhangra is a physically demanding dance form that involves vigorous movements, contributing significantly to physical fitness, strength, and endurance. When I began to shift my focus away from Bhangra due to the influence of Western culture, I missed out on these physical benefits. My reduced engagement in Bhangra dancing led to a noticeable decrease in my physical activity levels, which, in turn, affected my overall physical health and fitness. Additionally, I found myself increasingly drawn to sedentary activities prevalent in Western culture, such as watching television, playing video games, and spending time on social media. These activities occupied much of my time, further reducing my opportunities for physical exercise. As a result, I spent less time engaging in active, culturally significant practices like Bhangra, which would have been beneficial for my physical development. Bhangra dancing required coordination, balance, and rhythm, which were crucial for developing motor skills and enhancing posture. By not participating in Bhangra, I missed out on these developmental benefits. Instead, the prolonged engagement in Western sedentary activities led to poor posture, reduced coordination, and weaker motor skills compared to the physical abilities I would have developed through regular Bhangra practice. Bhangra was not just a dance for me but a form of cultural expression that combined physical movement with cultural identity. When influenced by Western culture, I engaged less in Bhangra, losing a vital aspect of physical expression tied to my cultural heritage. This loss impacted my overall sense of self and well-being, which was often reflected in my physical demeanor and confidence. Adopting Western cultural practices led me to different physical activities that did not align with the cultural expressions inherent in Bhangra, creating a disconnect between my physical and cultural identities.
