rod phototransduction
-
a photon of light activates the GCPR rhodopsin by changing the configuration of the 11-12 double bond at the light sensitive retina (cis to trans)
GPCR-activated cascade
-
- in response to a photon of light
rhodopsin activates G protein (Ggamma, transducin)
-
- phosphodiesterase (PDE) hydrolyses cGMP -> GMP
- decrease in levels of cGMP leads to closure of Na+ channels and hyper polarisation

the 3 cone opsin differ in their sensitivity to light, being tuned to respond to short (blue), medium (green) and long (red) wavelength light

receptive fields
-
receptive field is the particular region of sensory space (eg. the body surface or the visual. field projected onto the retina) in which a stimulus will modify the firing of that individual
outputs from primary sensory neurons typically converge onto fewer secondary and subsequent neurons int he system, giving each go these neurons a receptive field, typically larger than that of the primary sensory neurons
in many sensory systems, dendrites of individual neurons belonging to the same neuronal type cover the sensory field as completely as possible but with minimal overlap to ensure a complete and non-redundant representation of sensory input - TILING
receptive field = extend of dendrite - stimulating neuron within receptive field will activate its firing

- RETINAL GANGLION CELLS - specific features of the visual scene are encoded in population of retinal ganglion cells
luminance detectors
the ON and OFF cone bipolar cells activate RGCs within the ON and OFF layers of the IPL, respectively
this produces three main parallel streams of information being carried by the axons of RGCs; light ON, light OFF and light ON/OFF
