As the population increased, housing became less readily available. Because of this, vast slum-like cheaply made homes were made to cope with the big numbers. They were made close to factories, and most were crammed narrowly into streets. Houses were extremely small, most having only two rooms. Tenements (taller housing) was built in courtyards off of the main streets. People would be packed everywhere, including cellars, which could have 2-3 famillies living in them at the same time.
