Unit 8
Wallace
believed that species changed over time so they could fit into new environments
Adaption, played and helps in the Darwins theory, both worked off of eachother.
Evidence of evolution:
Biogeography: the study of where organisms live now and where they and their ancestors lived in the past, patterns in the distribution of fossils and living species combined with information from geology tell us how modern organisms evolved from their ancestors
The age of Earth and fossils: Radioactive dating indicates that Earth is 4.5 billion years old, recently discovered fossils now show clearly how modern species evolved from extinct ancestors
-
Genetics and molecular biology: At the time I care level, overwhelming similarities in the genetic code of all organisms, along with homologous teeth and molecules, provide evidence of common descent
-
Whales
This adaptation of changing the legs into fins allows the whales to glide smoother through water and takes an unnecessary part away since they do not go on land
We used fossils and biogeography, as well as anatomy and molecular biology
We were comparing homologous structures since they were similar in their origin and structure. This indicates that they have a common ancestor, as seen through the whales, with the comparison of the hind-legged ancient whales to the flippers of whales now.
This type of evolution would be macro because the ancestry had passed down through many different species and groups.
This type of evolution would be divergent. This is due to the adaptation of the whales, changing to make it easier considering their environment and surroundings.
Superbugs
The longer it takes for a disease or infection to go away due to the resistance of the immune system
Phylogeny
the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms, or of a particular feature of an organism.
Common Ancestry
-
according to the principle of common descent all species living and extinct are united by descent from ancient common ancestors and exhibit diversity due to Natural Selection and adaption
Natural Selection:
Occurs in any situation in which more individuals are born then can survive. Natural
inheritable variation affects the ability to survive and reproduce
-
Skin Color:
The further away from the equator, the lighter
Deals with melanin and vitamin D
