Ethnicity - Pupil Identities
Archer
teachers dominant discourse defines ethnic minority pupils identities as lacking favoured identity of ideal pupil
Ideal pupil
white, m/c, masculinised identity with normal sexuality
seen as achieving in right way through natural ability + initiative
Pathologized pupil
Asian, 'deserving poor', feminised identity, asexual or oppressed sexuality
plodding, conformist + culture bound overachiever
slogger who succeeds through hard work rather than natural ability
Demonised pupil
black or white, w/c, hyper-sexualised identity
unintelligent, peer-led, culturally deprived, underachiever
ethnic minority pupils likely to be seen as demonised or pathologized pupils
teachers stereotype Asian girls as quiet, passive or docile
Chinese pupils
while successful, seen as achieving success in wrong way through hard working, passive conformism rather than natural ability
simultaneously praised + viewed negatively by teachers
teachers stereotyped Chinese families as 'tight' + 'close' + used this to explain girls' supposed passivity
even success of ethnic minority pupils will be seen as overachievement since proper achievement seen to be natural ability of privileged, white, m/c ideal pupil
EVALUATION
:( criticised for being deterministic as pupil identities are multi layered + school is only one aspect of a students identity
:( can lead to formation of subcultures
:( pupils may develop a negative self concept based on teachers stereotypes about their identities
