-
Ear wax
Normal Function
Hydrophobic coating to prevent macerations, antibacterial properties, acidic pH to prevent pathogens
-
Foreign Body
Most common in children, and can cause conductive hearing loss, source of inflammation
-
Infections
Herpes Zoster
Leads to otalgia, vescicles, and has dermatomal distribution
-
Acute Otitis Externa
Organisms
Most common pseudomonas, and staph aureus
Pre-inflammatory
Ear exposed to predisposing factors (Head, humidity, maceration)
Inflammatory Stage
Bilateral overgrowth, progressive oedema leading to coplete canal obstruction
Symptoms
Otalgia, otorrhea, aural fullness
Treatment
Debridement, Systemic antibiotic
Topical Antibiotics: Ciprodex otic drops, aminoglycoside otic drops
