diversity and inclusion plan

50 : 20 : 12

other context surrounding podcasts
podcasts allowed for people to download and stream shows when they want to rather than waiting for a show to come on the scheduled radio.
in November of 2018 the BBC launched BBC sounds, this means people can get their audio media on demand. it shows digital convergence from the BBC. as its available across a range of social medias.
podcast means that hosts will be able to get air time despite maybe being a nicher audience, without podcasts george may not have been able to get his show on the radio.
podcasts may take away from the interactive front that radio has such as call ins and messages. George tries to bring this interactive element back by introducing his webpage "common ground", common ground allows people to interact with the podcast and other listeners. listeners can send in audio clips, messages and art related to the podcast.

how do media producers maintain variety in their audiences?
the BBC's charter means that their media products have to reflect the diverse nature of British society, as this podcast was created to appeal to a British minority it may have been played later at night and on a less mainstream station such as BBC radio 2 or BBC one extra.
George will have complete creative control of his media product which means he is able to change the layout of his podcast as he wants (use of music, storytelling, drama) and discuss marginalised stories. Example: Chapter 3 "A Grenfell Story" it offers a marginalised narrative

P&P
the BBC won't make content in order to gain profit as they rely on TV License fees which anyone in the UK with a tv has to pay
The unique and fluid format of Have You Heard George’s Podcast? might also be used to support Curran and Seaton’s idea that socially diverse patterns of ownership help create conditions for varied and adventurous productions
Livingston and Lunt
Regulation
The BBC, as a PSB has strict guidelines on what can be shown, BBC 1 rarely features sex or nudity.
All BBC broadcasts follow a strict watershed before 9pm so they can't use anything inappropriate before then
an unscheduled podcast doesn't need to follow a watershed, it has verbal and written warnings of adult content and prompt the user to add a parental lock on inappropriate content.
this really disproves livingston and lunt as the BBC are able to regulate their content effectively online
Audience
issues of diversity and inclusion became very apparent since 2020 with the BLM protestors
the Grenfell tower disaster in 2017 became a talking point on how society treats underprivileged social groups
Have you heard Georges podcast dedicated 2 episodes in the first chapter to exploring the lives of people in the community and how the disaster affected them. Other episodes have looked at economic disparity, lack of opportunity and the impact of drug crime on black Asian and other minority communities
georges podcast offers clear examples of audience grouping and is an example of a media product having a niche audience
radio 5 lives target audience are middle aged, middle class, ABC1 men. 35-55 and affluent, this reflects in the viewership for have you heard georges podcast as this age group will be interested in hearing stories of a life they're so far removed from.
use of modern music and references to modern interests will attract a younger audience as they're topics and references they'll understand., chapter 1 has modern rap songs playing and references to other celebrities
the common ground space allows viewers to interact with each other and promotes creativity amongst the viewers, it also give the consumers a way to become prosumers and produce content in relation to the podcast.
