The Consequences/Effects on Norway from Being Occupied by Germany, THEY…
The Consequences/Effects on Norway from Being Occupied by Germany
Resistance Movements...
Once the attack on Norway began by Germany, Norway refused to surrender. Many of the resistance movements that were made were in defense of caused because of the Germans trying to occupy their country.
Demonstration of Resistance... Norway demonstrated there resistance against Nazi Germany in many ways. One of these way was resisting the Nazi education given to students. Parents and teachers protested against this and later were able to succeed and Germany back down from this enforcement.
Shunning of Nazis... All Norwegians during this time would shun any Nazi they came in contact with. This included moving seats on any form of transportation to not sit with a Nazi, giving Nazis the wrong directions to places, and boycotting Nazi owed businesses.
Contributing Economically...
Due to Norway being occupied by Germany, from 1940-1945, they were not able to contribute a ton economically. For them there economic stability weakened as Nazi Germany gained more control.
While under occupation by Germany, Norway lost all of its main trading partners. They were not able to produce enough for himself let alone produce it for allies. Nazi Germany took about 57% of Norway's production leaving them with about 43% to support their economy.
Famine was a major concern because Germany took most of the resources for themselves and for their war support. People started to grow more gardens and providing food for themselves.
Medical Contributions...
Since they were occupied by Germany for most of the war, Norway was not able to make a significant contribution to medical support.
The Norwegian Medical Association lost 85% of its members due to the German occupation.
There was a decline in health services provided because the Germans took most of it away to contribute to their war efforts.
Post-War Reconstruction...
Norway (surprisingly) was able to recover quickly after the war. They didn't have to re-build much and were able to help allies recover since they did so quickly.
When Germany occupied Norway they built a lot of infrastructure. When they left all of that was still in Norway...leaving them a advantage in reconstruction.
Infrastructure included railways, military facilities, harbors, power stations, etc.
Germany also left behind many different materials that Norway was then able to use.
These include bunkers, barracks, airports, casinos, cinemas, etc.
Interment Policies...
During WWII northern Norway was the location to two Jewish concentration camps that were run by Nazi Germany. Hitler hated the Jews which is why these were created.
Jews were placed in interment camps and later deported, to Germany, to eventually be killed there.
Since Jews were scared of being executed, some fled to Sweden or even hid from the Germans so that they were not deported. Often times the people that hid were found.
War Crimes...
The Purge in Norway: The National Treachery Settlement was a things stating that they would purge anyone in Norway who teamed with the Germans.
Vidkun Quisling founded a pro-Nazi party called the Fascist National Union Party. Since he betrayed Norway he was tried and convicted on charges of treason and sentenced to death.
Quisling and 40 others were put on trial at this purge and later executed as a punishment for the betrayal of Norway.
Occupation and Liberation...
Unfortunately Norway was held captive by Germany from the start of the war till basically the end.
Germany chose to occupy Norway because of its easy access to Norway which was there main source of iron ore. They also wanted to claim Norway's naval bases in case of attack against Britain.
At the end of the war, Nazi Germany decided to free Norway and Norway was finally liberated after 5 years or occupation.
THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE BECAUSE...
