CENTRAL, PERIPHERAL & AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYTEMS
CNS
-
-
-
Brain Stem
Diencephalon (the forebrain)
- Thalamus: learning memory, sensation
- Hypothalamus: autonomic control centre
- Pineal Gland: Sleep-wake cycles (endocrine)
Midbrain (supports the cerebrum)
- Superior Colliculi: isua reflex centre
- Ingerior Colliculi: auditory relex centre
Brain Stem (connects to spinal cord)
- Pons: Pneumotaxic centre (breathing)
- Medulla: cardiac, visceral, respiratory control
Protective Structures
-
Bone
- forms an incompressible barrier
Meninges
- Dura Matar (Outer): leathery physical barrier
- Arachnoid (Mid): web-like CSF layer
- Pia Matar (Inner): thin vascularised layer
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)support & nutrition for nervous tissue
- brain 'floats' within skull reducing weight
- circulates through ventricles, subarachnoid central canal
THE SPINAL CORD
External
-
-
Enlargements
- cervical & lumbar region serving limbs
Conus Medullaris
- cord termination short of the vertebral column
Cauda Equina
- 'drooping' of the lumbar & sacral nerves
Filum Terminale
- extensions of pia matar anchoring the chord
Internal
Posterior Median Sulcus
- shallow groove at the back of the cord
Anterior Median Fissure
- deep grove at the front of the cord
Posterior (Dorsal) Horns
- cell bodies of afferent (sensory) neurons
Anterior (Ventral) Horns
- contains cell bodies of efferent (motor) neurons
Central Canal
- contains CSF & ependymal cells
