Understanding Temperature
Rain cloud in a jar science experiment. Following Kim's instructions on the best ideas for kids' website, I will teach the learners about the science behind rainfall and then have the learners follow my step-by-step instructions as we conduct the experiment.
What is rain?
Rain is water that comes from the sky. Rain comes from clouds.
Why do we need rain?
Rain helps plants grow. Rain makes the rivers and lakes full of water. Rain gives us drinking water.
Using building blocks the learners will construct a house that will withstand different types of weather in groups. Once their houses are completed we will test them out using water for rain, a fan for wind and cotton balls for snow.
Activities
Craft activity: Kite
Following the step-by-step instructions in the Easy Paper Kite for Kids article, written by ReadsinTrees. The teacher will explain and show the students how to construct their own kite using coloured paper, straight straws, string, ribbon, scissors, and tape.
Activity
Homemade thermometer as shown by Karyn on the Teach Beside Me website. Have the learners observe a thermometer to help them understand why it goes up and down, then do an experiment. Construct the homemade thermometer and ask the children to predict what they think is going to happen when we place our homemade thermometer in a bowl of ice water and when we place it in a bowl of boiling water. Let the students draw their predictions and then conduct the experiment and have the students observe while promoting discussion by asking questions. After conducting the experiment have the learners re-evaluate their predictions and draw the outcome to compare to their predictions for discussion.
Activity:
Divide the learners into groups and provide each group with a chart that has two sections sunny weather and rainy weather, then provide the learners with pictures of different clothing items, instruct the learners to colour in and cut out these pictures and then sort these pictures under the correct sections based on what we will wear on sunny days in comparison to what we would wear on rainy days.

When it is windy you can feel the air move, it can be a gentle soft breeze or strong and blows hard. Wind makes things move like the leaves in trees, and that is why kites fly because the wind moves them. The wind can be cold or warm.
Sunny weather
Rainy weather
Snowy weather Windy weather
The structure of a house (Floors, walls, roof) Why we need shelter from the weather
The key concept of this lesson: Students learn about the characteristics of wind and how it affects objects. The students also develop their technological skills of investigating, designing, making, evaluating, and communicating.
The key concept of this lesson is to teach children about the different types of weather and to develop their technological skills by making a house prototype using blocks.
The key concept of this lesson is to teach students Rain formation: Rain forms when water droplets in clouds stick together and become heavy enough to fall to the ground which gives us rainy weather.

What is temperature?
Temperature tells us how hot or how cold something is. We use a thermometer to measure temperature.
How do we feel temperature?
When it is hot we feel sweaty and thirsty. When it is cold, we feel chilly and want to wear warm clothes.
How temperature changes:
The temperature changes throughout the day and seasons.
Summer is hot and winter is cold.
the day is warmer than at night.
The key concept of this lesson is: What is temperature and how do we measure it?

Different types of weather: hot, cold, windy, rainy.
Hot/ sunny weather activities: Playing with sprinklers and water balloons, swimming, outdoor picnics, and eating ice cream.
Cold weather activities: Play in the snow and make snowmen, ice skating, and drinking hot chocolate while watching movies.
Rainy weather activities: Jump in puddles, play board games, and watch the rain from inside.
Windy weather activities: Fly kites, race against the wind, and play with wind chimes to listen to the sound they make.
Discuss the different types of weather and have the students draw a picture of their favorite weather and weather activity. The picture must include themselves doing an activity and indications of the type of weather, when the students have completed their activity have them share their drawing and favorite weather activity with the class.
The key concept o this lesson is to help the students understand weather preferences and weather activities. By Identifying their favorite activities for different weather, children can develop an understanding of how weather impacts choices and experiences . This lesson also encourages communication.

What we wear during different types of weather.
During hot, sunny weather, we wear short-sleeved shirts, shorts, dresses, flip-flops, and sunglasses, we also apply sunscreen to protect our skin from the sun.
During cold weather, we wear long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, jackets, long pants, and warm socks. Accessories include: hats gloves, scarves, and boots
During rainy weather, we wear waterproof clothing, jackets with hoods, windbreakers, and rain boots. We also use umbrellas to help provide cover from the rain.
During windy weather, we wear windbreakers and jackets.
The key concept of this lesson is to understand weather appropriate clothing.
